The Second Annual Tourette Syndrome Association Brevard Golf Classic

Spring, 2008 at Viera East Golf Club

The Tourette Syndrome Association Brevard Golf Classic was created to raise awareness of Tourette Syndrome (TS) and the Tourette Syndrome Association’s Support Group services in Brevard County.

Perhaps you’ve seen recent episodes of Oprah, Dr. Phil, or NBC Dateline dealing with Tourette Syndrome.  You may also have seen the Discovery Health Channel show “Medical Incredible” or the Emmy award winning HBO documentary “I Have Tourette’s, but Tourette’s Doesn’t Have Me”.  If you have, you know that TS can be devastating for those afflicted, as well as those who love and live with them.

The primary objective of the tournament is to raise awareness and increase financial support for our Support Group services in Brevard County.  This includes increasing community education, assessment, and liaison through TS presentations to the community with financial support for continuing education and research materials for educators and healthcare professionals.  We are focused on early diagnosis, early intervention, and providing advocacy for children with TS.

At least 50% of all money raised will directly benefit families in Brevard County dealing with TS.  The remainder will be used to run our state of Florida operations.  As an example, our Florida operation runs an annual Family Weekend event, in Brandon, where kids with Tourette’s can go to meet each other and participate in activities.  During this time their parents receive important informational sessions on treating and coping with TS.

The money raised at the tournament may also provide financial support for developmental/diagnostic materials such as movement assessment battery for children (MABC), test of children’s handwriting (ETCH),  and measurement of visual-motor integration (revised Beery).

This year we hope to start a new tradition of Tourette’s awareness and fundraising in Brevard and hope to make some new friends as well at the 1st Annual Tourette Syndrome Association Brevard Golf Classic.
